550 Oil Pump Update Problem.........

There is an update for 04' to 08' 550 fan cooled engines. One is the carb needles and nozzles that need to be replaced to correct a mid-range lean condition for trail cruising. The second is an oil pump recirculation kit. One of the items is to remove the oil pump, discard the o-ring and install a gasket between the pump and block. **No where does it say to reshim the pump.....by installing the gasket you now have .028-.029" more play** Polaris recommends a .008-.016" end play for the pump in the service manual. You must add shims to obtain the proper end play or the oil pump shaft could be damaged. Polaris makes 3 different size shims: 3083671 (.006"), 3083672 (.012") and 3083673 (.024"). Add what you need to obtain the proper end play. Another problem......bring your caliper to measure the shims at your dealer.......Polaris has the wrong shims in the wrong bags. I opened 3 bags of the 3083672 (.012") shims to find 1 that was the proper size. All the other shims in the bags were .006". Packaged wrong.....beware.

This is typical for polaris. If you have a sled with this motor get rid of it asap. And whatever you do dont go with their 800 they havent figured that out yet either.[/b]
Ya, well at least it's not a Fire hazard, or something like that. Where's your Polaris?

So you left Polaris just because one model had a design Flaw?

I traded my 04 550 for the same reasons cfd79 did. Polaris customer service was horrible and said to just ride the sled hard.

I had it burn down two seasons in a row with 400 miles between builds and I just didn't trust the sled anymore. I do a lot of solo riding so I didn't want to chance it anymore.

I was looking at newer Polaris IQs but ended up getting a SkiDoo. I still have one older Polaris and it runs great so maybe I'll go back to Polaris one day but they really have to improve on their customer service.

ONE MODEL???? You need to read some more posts on the great fusion 900 debacle and dont forget the ongoing 800 saga. Those are some happy polaris customers.I agree with team fred Polaris customer service is useless. If I recall they advertised it as a "bulletproof motor".What a joke.Unlike team fred polaris will never see another dime of my hard earned money.

Some of my friends have 550's from 04-09. I stayed away from them right from the get go. To see an update, but not a recall is understandable cause it would cost them millions to do a recall on every 04-08 550.

They blow up more than anything around here. FYI I didn't bring up the Fusion 900 or dragon 800, thats a whole different topic.

I'm sure glad I chose the Edge X 800 over a Fusion 700. Never ever buy a first year machine.
